Open Wide |
|
"Open Wide!" takes children on an exciting journey into
their mouth. Trek and Rip teach children about proper dental
hygiene. Children can then play dentist as they brush,
floss, drill, air suction with non-invasive tools. Children
can also pull out a big tongue out of the mouth. A large
monitor above the mouth shows the actual areas of taste
receptors for reference. Children Velcro items of food that
are bitter, salty, sweet or sour onto the tongue. The
educator can check flood placement for accuracy. After
placing the tongue back in the mouth and removing the food
items, the educator can also articulate the mouth to move up
and down upon a prop piece of food demonstrating the
ripping, tearing and chewing capability of the mouth.
Educators reinforce good dental hygiene practices and can
explain the mouth more in detail. |

|
In "Healthy Heart", guests pump air bubbles through a tube of viscous fluid
representing a healthy artery and through a tube
representing cholesterol plaque build-up to see and compare
the difference of air bubble flows. Guests can also pump
“blood” (air) into an “artery” and see the results of too
much pressure as areas of the artery distend beyond its
walls and thereby dramatically illustrating hypertension.
Text , graphics and video help explain the need to lower
cholesterol and blood pressure through a healthy lifestyle
as well as to take any needed medicine.

Guests view the future effects of ultraviolet light exposure
on their skin in "Skin Deep". Each person has their picture taken with a
standard digital portrait camera and then with an Infra Red
camera. The two pictures are displayed side by side on a
large LCD screen where startling comparisons can be seen
between the two photos. Skin damage can easily be seen in
the infra red spectrum. The accompanying text, graphics and
video discuss ways to help prevent skin cancer due to over
exposure to UV light. |

scirrhous carcinoma and are able to see copies of a real
mammogram x-ray showing healthy breasts and unhealthy
breasts with varying sizes of lumps, both normal and
cancerous. They will also be able to touch and compare the
sizes of lumps that can be detected through exams and
mammograms and then use a breast soft tissue model with
imbedded cancer nodules that properly teaches technique for
breast self-exams. Text and graphics also illustrate the
importance of breast exams. |

and Braille. Children can experiment with hearing and how it
can change as well as compare the hearing of animals to
humans. They will also see how their speech pattern looks
and learn that everyone has different speech
characteristics. Children will also type in their name to
see what their name looks like in Braille, as well as in
sign language. |

The "Eye Robot" showcases a large plasma eye. A flat screen
monitor is located on the side of the torso. look close-up.
An eye animation that reacts to the increased/decreased
light that is tied to a rheostat. A monitor with the eye is
in a cavity in the center of the eye robot and the lights
are around the perimeter. The pupil of the eye reacts to the
rheostat as well as the light. On the outside monitor,
children can experiment with a variety of optical illusions
and eye tests. Near-sighted and far-sighted vision are
examined as well as elementary level eye charts to test
vision.

Nose Job |

The "Nose Job" demonstrates just how effectively the nose
filters dust, dirt and other things floating around in the
air from reaching our lungs. Children step up to a large
3-dimensional nose and insert their hands into the nostrils.
In the left nostril, the child pushes and then releases a
switch, which activates a camera view of the nose "inhaling"
and debris being caught in nose hairs. In the right nostril,
the children will "feel" slimy and rubbery textures inside
the nose for a "gross" hands-on, but fun illustration of
mucus. Two flat screen monitors resembling glasses, and
placed where eyes would be, explore fun facts about smell,
sneezes, etc. |

need for a day at the beach and place the items on and

Spine Tinglers |
|
n the "Spine Tinglers", children learn the basic components
of the human spine. There is an alternating series of round
discs (vertebrae) and small inner tubes (discs) stacked onto
a central shaft (spinal cord). At the top there is a wheel
handle that children are invited to turn (simulating spinal
column compression). If the spine compression is too much,
they can see the effects of limited flexibility and disc
distortion. When loosened, the students can see the mobility
that the spine has regained. The educator can also replace a
healthy disc with a ruptured disc and demonstrate some
causes of back problems. An illustration of common and
uncommon spinal injuries is displayed on a flat monitor as
well as an overall graphic of nerve and spinal column
systems. A scaled human model demonstrates proper lifting
techniques. Correct and incorrect postures are taught. |
