There is an alternating series of round discs (vertebrae) and small inner tubes (discs) stacked onto a central shaft (spinal cord). At the top there is a wheel handle that children are invited to turn (simulating spinal column compression). If the spine compression is too much, they can see the effects of limited flexibility and disc distortion. When loosened, the students can see the mobility that the spine has regained. The educator can also replace a healthy disc with a ruptured disc and demonstrate some causes of back problems. An illustration of common and uncommon spinal injuries is displayed on a flat monitor as well as an overall graphic of nerve and spinal column systems. A scaled human model demonstrates proper lifting techniques. Correct and incorrect postures are taught.
